Be Careful
Leaning through windows, stories high
I get to take in the damage, looking down
As they clean up the mess
We pull pinions, placing bets
Cold cash or coke, we can only guess
And they say
Be careful, be gentle to yourself
'Cause no one else will
Talk over coffee
We hear the sound from outside
We stop for a moment
And gradually resume our stride
And I notice we didn't even look this time
Which action's worse, I can't decide
CHORUS
And it's a point of pride
How numb we can be to survive
And there's a game we play
With eachother these days
To see who can care the least
And I, for one, need some relief
CHORUS [2x]

Easier
I am the son of a soap opera town
Mayberry rebel, a middle class clown
You were the backflip, doe eyed
Tree climbing angel from heaven who finally came down
I never thought that I could be
Getting my grey hair with you beside me
And it's something I'm blind to
But you still see
But it couldn't be better, I know
And it shouldn't be easier
I should just stop waiting for the other boot to fall
I wanna be the toy in your cereal box
I wanna be Carter at your peace talks
I wanna get almost too familliar
But still notice the way that you walk
And if you said you were going away
I would run on the tarmac
And I would lay down in front of the plane
Just to get you to stay
CHORUS
I've got everything I've ever wanted here
Everything and damn this constant fear
I'm sure I'm gonna lose it all
Just waiting for the other boot fo fall
And if you thought I could be replaced
I wouldn't just stop with an ear
I would cut off my whole fucking face
Just to make my point clear
CHORUS
The other boot to fall
Waiting for the other boot to fall

This is a favorite of the Victims. So there was much consternation when it didn't appear on Abulum. Not to worry, Glen will be releasing it sometime in early 2001. In the meantime, we have this MP3 to keep up happy.
Note: When singing "Easier" live, Glen often replaces the first verse with this one: "I was eighteen, so were you / I was that Birkenstock, geek-rock dude / You were the back-flipped, doe-eyed tree-climbin' Earth-mama / Beautiful evergreen girl" |

Forget About Me
I'm fairly aware we talk too much
It's so easy for me to get out of touch
Someone needs my part in the show
You'd be much better served if you let me go
There's something that you want me to be
It's impossible, can't you see?
For the sake of us all
Just forget about me
We have reached the decline of the subject's art
So you won't be surprised when I miss my mark
Like a slow-mo airplane crash
You see what's coming next
But you can't turn back
CHORUS [2x]
There's a scared look in your eye
But I warned you now, didn't I?
There's a big sign in front of the cage
So if you been bit, it's yourself you should blame
CHORUS [for the sake of the world]
So, for the sake of us all
I've gotta leave

I Will Take My Time
Feeling far from home
Feeling far from anything I know
____________________
Feel less, ____ by me
Running so slow
This is why this is tied around me
Be still, be quiet
Don't break this spell
Something we both know
But we never like to mention
When a part of me goes
Now I'm chasing that connection
The further I go
The harder to get back again
Be still, be quiet
Don't break this spell
And I will take my time
And I will take my time
I've made up my mind
Feeling far from home
Feeling far from anything I know
_____________________
All I thought I left behind me
Won't leave me alone
And it feels so strong inside me
Be still, be quiet
Don't break this spell
CHORUS
And I felt like I could lie there all my life

Gabriel
Gabriel, listen
I'm in need of a friend
Gabriel, would you listen
Faith alone is a prison
But I can't sleep with the fallen
Gabriel, would you listen
If you are here, then let me see
I need you now, please don't leave me
Gabriel, wouldn't listen
You will speak for the father
But who will speak for the others
The widow, son and the mother
And I'm so far now from Heaven
But I've a question to send him
Gabriel, won't you listen
The church is fallen
The priests are hardened
If there are your workers
Then is all this love, this Earth, this good forsaken? [2x]
Gabriel, listen
I'm in need of a friend
Gabriel, would you listen
Faith alone is a prison
So I am one of the fallen
Gabriel, wouldn't listen [2x]

Mutual Admiration Society
Don't do me no favors
Try not to wake the neighborhood
There's a joy in never having learned
Joy in never having ______________
Somewhere out there
You will run straight down the middle
I've no place left
When you pull hard to the center
Tell me all your secrets
A spotlight on your weakness
With friends like me, who needs to go outside?
Just stay in wishin' you would die
CHORUS
With a lone, cold, black tenor
Shameless rider
Your rookie fumble, seinor driver
Is this what you wanted?
Lost and quite forgotten
CHORUS
Somewhere out there [4x]

Sleep of the Blessed
I've done it again
Made spectacular claims
And I lied in the name of a good love
I think I recall
Someone brought me here
But the memory's not clear
Just what it was
A good love
A good love
You define yourself by your company
By the promises you make
And the ones that you keep
Sleep the sleep of the blessed
Dream the dreams of the whole
Forget when you wake
How far you've fallen down below
You can blow me a kiss
If you think it brings luck
It's the faith that makes it work
So what the fuck, why not?
CHORUS
Down from a good love
You had a good good love

Slow and So Much Time
Slow and so much time
How could I have been so blind
We have all our lives and oh
Hard to believe I faltered so
Longing to be older
We need so much more
And I can't hold you back now at all
I can't give you all you need
You know as well as I
But still you see
It's all that I must _____
Longing to be older
To be older
Slow and so much time
How could I know __________
We have all our lives and oh
Hard to believe the lengths that I will go
Longing to be older
And all that I must undergo
To be older

OK, these lyrics are so full of holes, they're probably not ready for prime-time. But I figured you could handle it.
There is but one recording of "Slow and So Much Time." It's from a show at Savoy in 1992. The song hasn't been heard live in several years.
Glen's plans for some of the songs heard at this show ("Wrapped in Water" and "I Will Take My Time" among them) are unclear. |

Comes a Time
There comes a time in life
To pull on your coat and go outside
To taste the vinegar of life, bitter life
Taste a second time, and it's a sweet surprise
Sweet surprise
It's not that hard to figure it out
When there's no question, there's no doubt
Burned in efigy, senseless time
Dispute the miracle, but the water still was wine
And that's my crime
There is a face in the stone
We let it out to find its form
To shape the testament of will, strongest will
Pride, humility a bitter pill
Bitter pill
Sweet surrender, oh my Lord
I never thought I'd see
It's not surprising, still I find
I'm shaking, crying
But I'm laughing, softly
There comes a time
To pull on your coat and go outside

This is an old Toad song. Toad and Glen have been playing it live forever. Glen has said There Comes a Time will be recorded for the album he's doing with Nickel Creek. "This is a song that came out of reading The Tao of Pooh. I get my Eastern philosophy the way most Westerners do, which is third- or fourth-hand. The Tao of Pooh is a great way to gather third-hand Eastern philosophy. "In any event, there's a description of a painting called The Vinegar Taster. Buddha and Lao-Tzu and Confucius are all sitting around with ladles and a big vat of vinegar. Buddha and Confucius are both going 'ick', and Lao-Tzu is smiling, because life is sweet. And the other two just don't know it yet. " -Glen |

Wrapped in Water
He is a lot like me
Didn't know it
He is a lot like everyone he meets
Says he has dreams
And I was laughing at him
Promised no more lies
I crossed my fingers that time
Wrapped in water
Someone holding me
Wrapped in water
Someone holding me
And I am a lot like him
And I know it
I am a lot like everyone I hate
I don't have dreams
They take too much of my time
I promised no more lies
And crossed my fingers that time
CHORUS

This is an old Toad song as well. One of the first known recordings is from 1992. It was recorded for both Pale and Dulcinea, but didn't make it on either album. In some versions, Glen played the mandolin. Glen has recently begun playing Wrapped in Water again, to the delight of his live audiences. |
